Peter and the

Starcatcher

Kind of Project: Set Piece Fabrication

Materials Used: EVA Foam, Contact Cement, Wood, & Airbrushing

Through my current set decoration independent study with UCF professor Vandy Wood, I had the opportunity to help create some of the set pieces and props for Theatre UCF. My first project was to help make these large scale flowers for Peter and the Starcatcher with a team of 3 other people. At the beginning of the build, we were given a Vectorworks model of the flowers in the set, dimensions of the petals, and some reference photos. From there, we made patterns of the petals and used them to cut the pieces out of EVA foam. We then took those foam pieces, cut slits into them, and used contact cement to glue those slits back together in order to achieve a more curved look. After doing that process for a total of 16 petals (12 small ones and 4 large ones), we power drilled wood boards together to create 3 X shapes. We then drilled the petals to the wood so that they had more structure behind them.

After finishing this process, we were able to focus on the center of the flowers. Our goal for the center was to create something that would cover the wood planks. We decided on a foam circle center with smaller petals jutting out. For the smaller flowers, we made two rows of petals in the center that windowed each other. We also ended up curving and curling the smaller, center petals with a heat gun. After gluing the center pieces onto the wood structures, we also decided to airbrush the flowers to give them a little bit more color. They were then rigged and ready for the show!

During the show, the flowers were meant to represent the forests found on the Island of Neverland. Being that the flowers are mostly white, the lighting designers were able use different color palettes in order to evoke diverse tones and timbres from the flowers.
